Julie and Kael: The Wedding

Woodacre, California - June 25th, 2005

Prelude

Julie is from a little town in Massachusetts. Kael is from Berkeley. Kael was following the Dead around the country, working in garages, shooting the rapids. Eventually they both found themselves in college. Julie was working through the summers and doing research, while Kael was finding out about being a dad. How would they meet? Julie came to Berkeley in the Fall of 1995 and her second rotation was in Tom Alber's lab where Kael was doing undergraduate research, but love would have to wait.

Graduate School

First Julie and then Kael chose Susan Marqusee's lab to do their thesis work. A story of love unfolded there like a single domain protein suddenly plunged into 4 molar guanidine. Susan's lab was a great place to work and study, and after coming to respect each other as scientists, Kael and Julie eventually hooked up.

Some of there favorite things are: Lake Anza, playing games, science, music, and planning their wedding.

The Engagement

Kael proposed to Julie in the summer of 2003, at the Lost Coast, presenting Julie with a handsome "engagement compass" and a hokey story about how she is his compass, etc... Not to be rushed, Julie said she would need some more time to think about it. As it had already been several years, Kael saw no harm in waiting a few more. In summer of 2004 Julie decided that getting married was a good idea but that the "engagement compass," however slick with its sighting mirror and declination adjustment, was no substitute for a proper ring. This was quickly taken care of and the happy couple finds themselves all ready to go.
